Target Audience
This introductory continuing education activity was planned to meet the needs of practitioners, scientists, educators, administrators, and others committed to excellence in clinical pharmacy and patient pharmacotherapy. The program is beneficial for those who treat, instruct, or otherwise participate in the care of ambulatory and hospitalized patients with or at risk for venous thromboembolism.
Program Objectives
At the conclusion of this program, participants should be able to:
- Describe the incidence and pathophysiology of venous thromboembolism (VTE).
- Identify patients at risk for the development of VTE.
- List non-pharmacologic and pharmacologic options for prophylaxis and treatment of VTE.
- Describe the mechanism of action of antithrombotic agents in VTE.
- Differentiate the dosing strategies for prophylaxis and treatment of VTE.
- List the common adverse effects and monitoring requirements of antithrombotic therapy in VTE.
Continuing Education Accreditation
The American Society of Health-System Pharmacists is accredited by the Accreditation Council for Pharmacy Education as a provider of continuing pharmacy education. This program provides 1.0 hour (0.10 CEU) of continuing education credit (program number 204-000-07-404-H01). Upon successful completion of the online CE post-test, participants may print their official ASHP CE statement. This program is available for continuing education credit from March 19, 2007 to April 18, 2009.
